In contrast, most reactors in the West, and all of the commercial power plants operating in the United States, are based on a design that relies on water to keep the nuclear reaction going. If the water heats up, the power drops. If a substantial amount of water boils or leaks way, the reactor shuts down. It cannot keep running. How Did the Soviets Let This Happen? The USSR had a lot of smart engineers. Theyd beaten the United States into space and swiftly electrified and industrialized a vast country. But as the HBO series points out, the country suffered from extreme management problems and a pattern of secrecy that wasnt compatible with industrial safety. The KGBthe USSRs secret police and intelligence agencyroutinely suppressed news of nuclear accidents, keeping them secret even from reactor operators who could have learned lessons from those events. Another RBMK reactor had suffered a mishap that should have been a warning for the Chernobyl operators, but this was kept from them.|I think this might be the maxipad with wings commercial that Karen was talking about. According to the official Soviet account, the explosion killed two plant workers, while 28 engineers and firefighters died of acute radiation syndrome in the weeks following the disaster. There were 600 people working on-site during the explosion, and 134 in total were sickened with acute radiation poisoning. The first responders and plant personnel who didnt survive had agonizing deaths, suffering vomiting and diarrhea, severe, full-body burns, and eventual organ failure. What happened in the aftermath? Authorities did not begin to evacuate communities around Chernobyl until the afternoon of April 27th, more than 24 hours after the explosion. As authorities expanded the evacuation zone, more than 300,000 people were placed on buses and evacuated away from the most contaminated areas. The soviets designated a 1,600 square mile no-go zone around the plant known as the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone meant to restrict access to the area to reduce the spread of contamination.|CHERNOBYL dramatizes the true story of one of the worst man-made catastrophes in history, and tells of the brave men and women who sacrificed to save Europe from unimaginable disaster. Jared Harris will play Valery Legasov, the Soviet scientist chosen by the Kremlin to investigate the accident. The five-part HBO miniseries CHERNOBYL, to be produced by Sister Pictures and The Mighty Mint as an HBO/Sky Television co-production, will begin filming next year, it was announced today by Kary Antholis, president, HBO Miniseries and CINEMAX Programming. From the moment Craig Mazin pitched us the story, we were convinced that this all-too-true tale of horror and redemption needed to be told, said Antholis. The miniseries is a tale of lies and cowardice, of courage and conviction, of human failure and human nobility. The miniseries focuses on the heartbreaking scope of the nuclear plant disaster that occurred in Ukraine in April 1986, revealing how and why it happened, and telling the shocking, remarkable stories of the heroes who fought and fell. Based on powerful real-life events, CHERNOBYL will be the first production of the drama partnership between HBO and Sky. Jared Harris recently starred in The Crown and received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Mad Men. His film credits include Allied, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and Lincoln, among others. The first two episodes of Chernobyl play out like a horror movie, with a hauntingly effective score to augment the slow reveals of the compounding disaster, as geiger counters begin humming like a cacophony of summer cicadas. The human toll is immense and visceral; a man holds open a door with his hip to help his comrades try and cool the exploded core (which cannot actually be done), and his hip disintegrates. Besides the opening scene and the closing episode, Chernobyl plays out in a linear narrative that makes you feel trapped inside a nightmare. There is a cloud of death that no one can see, except that we can see its effects on the faces of those who encounter it as their skin sloughs off. Every additional person conscripted to try and stop the meltdown from spreading and potentially killing millions across Europe is the face of someone you know will die probably soon and horribly. Chernobyl 6 Episode.
In Superman in Exile, a 1954 episode of the TV series Adventures of Superman, Superman (George Reeves) has a problem. In the course of saving Metropolis from an experiment gone out of control, hes become irradiated. What the Geiger counter suggests, a flip of the light switch confirms when he begins to glow in the dark. No, it cant be! says one of the scientists hes just saved. Your whole body radioactive forever! Fortunately, being Superman, radiation affects him differently, but this does mean hell have to live away from humans, even his pal Jimmy Olsen and the fair Lois Lane, for the rest of his (presumably long) life. One of TVs first depictions of the effects of radiation, Superman in Exile stands in stark contrast to one of its latest, the HBO miniseries Chernobyl. In its third episode, Open Wide, O Earth, Chernobyl portrays the effects of radiation on a non-Kryptonian body in graphic detail, watching as a first responder loses virtually all resemblance to a human being as his body deteriorates. Its an almost unthinkably horrific fate, made all the more terrifying by radiations invisibility and its ubiquity. Chernobyl Episode 5 watch online.
